Becoming a Man, based on the acclaimed memoir by writer P. Carl, tells the story of one man’s gender transition journey and its impact on different aspects of his life. As the Assistant Graphic Designer at the the American Repertory Theater, I acted as the creative lead on the show artwork for the play’s world premiere.

The world-premiere of Becoming a Man ran for three weeks at the American Repertory Theater in early 2024.

Inspiration

We explored many visual avenues for the show’s artwork, from depicting memories captured through photographs, to the topography of the Italian Dolomites, to ambiguous cut-out shapes of people.

Final Artwork

However, we kept returning to the theme of water, especially since the play begins and ends with the protagonist swimming—an activity P. Carl always loathed until he was finally able to swim “in the right body, in the right bathing suit.”
